Before You Store Your Household Goods: Seven Questions Worth Asking

Handing over the contents of your home to a storage company is a bigger decision than it first appears. Most people make it quickly, in the middle of a move or a job transfer, and only think about the details later. A few questions asked up front save a lot of worry afterwards.

1. Will they list every item?

An inventory is the single most useful thing a storage provider can give you. It means you know exactly what is being held, and you can ask for one carton back instead of the whole consignment.

2. How is the warehouse protected?

Ask about pest control, fire safety, security cover and how moisture is managed during the monsoon. A clean, monitored facility is very different from an empty godown with a lock on the door.

3. Who does the packing?

Good packing prevents most damage. Check whether the team brings materials, how fragile items and furniture are wrapped, and whether you can pack some things yourself.

4. Is it drive-up or doorstep?

In India the common model is doorstep: a team collects, stores and returns your goods, and you rarely visit the warehouse. Make sure the service you choose matches how you want to work.

5. How quickly can you get things back?

Find out how much notice you need to give and whether partial returns are possible.

6. What happens if something is damaged?

Ask about protection plans and how claims are handled before you sign, not after.

7. How long must you commit?

Short minimum periods matter when your plans are uncertain.

The SafeStorage team has written a detailed explainer covering how the service works in India, how much space typical homes need and how to prepare your belongings: a practical guide to storing your belongings in India. Reading it before you book will help you ask the right questions and compare providers on the things that actually protect your furniture, documents and keepsakes.
